"If love doesn't exist, then explain this."
A rush of emotion hit D.J. with the force of an ocean's wave. Pleasure-pain. Icy-heat. A thick, spreading force through her stomach and chest. Joy exploded in her mind, and she caught a glimpse of heaven as her angel's voice came to her once more, then faded into a void.
"And it only gets better when you give it away."
Total silence surrounded D.J. The void was her and she was the void. Then, out of the nothingness, came a sound. She went toward the noise. It became louder and louder until it filled the silence all around her.
A moaning, like an animal in agony, reached D.J.'s ears. Her eyelids were too heavy to lift, and for some reason tears streaked down her cheeks, wetting her neck in an irritating flood.
The sound came again, and she was shocked to discover the pained voice to be her own.
Agony sifted through her shoulder when she attempted to move. Reality burst upon her as she recalled where she'd been before unconsciousness had taken over her world.
"Where?" Her voice still sounded like a feral cry, but at least the word made sense.
"D.J., relax. You'll be all right now. The bullet's out."
She recognized the voice. But the owner's identity lay somewhere in the foggy recesses of her mind. She could trust the owner of the voicethat much she knewand she relaxed, as he'd ordered. Just before the darkness took her away once more, a name surfaced.
